What was done

Researchers developed and evaluated the psychometric properties of the Psychological Insight Questionnaire (PIQ) via an online survey of 1,661 psilocybin and LSD users (mean age 22.9 ± 8.5 years; 83% Caucasian/White; 72% men; 66% US residents). The study assessed construct validity against the Session Impacts Scale insight subscale, Mystical Experiences Questionnaire, and Challenging Experiences Questionnaire, as well as incremental validity in predicting retrospective changes in psychological flexibility and well-being/life satisfaction.

What was found

The final PIQ consists of 23 items across two subscales: Avoidance and Maladaptive Patterns Insights, and Goals and Adaptive Patterns Insights. Construct validity was supported by strong correlations with the Session Impacts Scale insight subscale and weak-to-moderate correlations with mystical and challenging experience measures (numerical correlation coefficients not reported in abstract). PIQ subscale scores correlated moderately-to-strongly with retrospective gains in psychological flexibility and well-being, and predicted unique variance in these outcomes beyond acute mystical and challenging effects.

Why it matters

This study provides a dedicated psychometric instrument to capture acute psychological insight during psychedelic sessions, expanding measurement beyond mystical or adverse acute experiences.

Limits

The study relied entirely on retrospective self-reports from a self-selected online convenience sample, introducing potential recall and selection biases. The sample was demographically non-diverse (predominantly young, white, non-Hispanic males). The cross-sectional design cannot establish prospective or causal predictive validity for clinical or therapeutic outcomes, and numerical effect sizes were omitted from the abstract.
