What was done

Researchers measured 6-year longitudinal changes in 318 randomly selected healthy adults aged 20–90 years from Berlin. Grip strength was measured with a hand dynamometer, muscle mass with dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA), and lower-extremity muscle power with a chair rise test and two-leg jumps (2LJP) on a Leonardo Mechanograph. Longitudinal changes were evaluated with paired t-tests by age group and sex, annual change differences were tested using ANOVA and Dunnett's test, and inter-variable differences were assessed with one-sample t-tests.

What was found

Lower-extremity jump power (2LJP) declined significantly starting in the 20–39-year-old age group for women (-3.70 W/kg; annual change: -0.46 W/kg) and men (-5.97 W/kg; annual change: -0.75 W/kg; both p < 0.001). The oldest age group exhibited the largest annual loss (-0.99 W/kg in women, -0.88 W/kg in men). The decline in 2LJP was significantly different compared to all variables of muscle mass and strength (p < 0.01). Numerical values for DXA muscle mass, grip strength, and the chair rise test were not reported in the abstract.
