What was done

In a simulated two-week school protocol, 112 adolescents were allocated to four experimental sleep schedules comparing total daily sleep opportunity (8 hours vs. 6.5 hours) and sleep structure (continuous nocturnal sleep vs. nocturnal sleep combined with a 90-minute afternoon nap: 8 h-continuous, 8 h-split, 6.5 h-continuous, and 6.5 h-split). Outcomes included declarative memory assessed via picture encoding and an educationally realistic factual knowledge task, as well as nocturnal slow-wave energy.

What was found

Splitting sleep significantly enhanced afternoon picture encoding and factual knowledge acquisition under both 6.5-hour and 8-hour total sleep conditions.
