How Much Sleep Does an Elite Athlete Need?

What was done

Researchers evaluated 175 elite athletes (30 females; mean age 22.2 ± 3.8 years) across 12 individual and team sports. Athletes answered a single question regarding how many hours of sleep they required to feel rested, maintained a sleep diary, and wore a wrist activity monitor (actigraphy) for approximately 12 nights during regular training. A sleep deficit index was calculated by subtracting objective average sleep duration from self-assessed sleep need.

What was found

Athletes reported a mean sleep need of 8.3 ± 0.9 hours to feel rested, whereas objective mean sleep duration was 6.7 ± 0.8 hours, yielding a mean sleep deficit of 96.0 ± 60.6 minutes. Only 3% met their self-reported sleep requirement, and 71% had a deficit of ≥1 hour. Individual-sport athletes obtained significantly less sleep than team-sport athletes (F1,173 = 13.1, P < .001, d = 0.6), despite reporting similar sleep requirements (F1,173 = 1.40, P = .24, d = 0.2).

Why it matters

This study quantifies the gap between elite athletes' perceived sleep requirements and their actual sleep duration, showing that substantial sleep debt is widespread during normal training phases—particularly among individual-sport athletes.

Limits

Sleep need was assessed via a single subjective self-report item rather than objective physiological sleep-extension or performance-titration methods. The sample was heavily male-dominated (145 males vs 30 females). The observation window was limited to approximately 12 nights during standard training, and the abstract reports no direct measures of athletic performance, cognitive function, or injury outcomes.
