What was done

Researchers performed non-targeted screening to identify chemical compounds migrating from plastic food contact materials (microwave trays, microwave oven bags, and oven bags) under microwave and conventional oven heating conditions. Migration was evaluated using gas chromatography (GC) with electron ionization and liquid chromatography (LC) with positive and negative electrospray ionization paired with high-resolution Orbitrap mass spectrometry (mass error <5 ppm), validated using isotopically labeled reference standards.

What was found

A total of 74 migrating substances—including intentionally added substances (additives) and non-intentionally added substances (degradation and oxidation products)—were tentatively identified: 24 by GC-Orbitrap MS, 35 by LC-Orbitrap MS positive mode, and 19 by LC-Orbitrap MS negative mode (4 detected across multiple modes). The migration levels of 25 chemicals differed significantly between heating methods (p < 0.05): 20 migrants had higher concentrations under microwave heating, whereas 5 were higher under conventional oven heating. Several identified migrants had no prior reports of migration from food contact materials.

Why it matters

This study provides an analytical framework for detecting complex non-intentionally added substances from food packaging and demonstrates that microwave heating can facilitate greater migration of certain plastic additives and degradation products compared to conventional oven baking.
