What was done
Twenty-four male patients with androgenetic alopecia (Norwood scale average 4.4, range 2–6) were recruited into a randomized, blinded, placebo-controlled trial. Subjects were randomized to apply either a novel topical SULT1A1 enzyme booster formula or a sham adjuvant prior to daily 5% topical minoxidil. Hair growth was monitored using global photography over a 60-day period.
What was found
All 24 randomized patients completed the study (12 in the active arm, 12 in the placebo arm). Hair regrowth was reported in 75% of subjects receiving the SULT1A1 adjuvant with minoxidil compared to 33% of subjects receiving the placebo adjuvant with minoxidil (p = 0.023).
Why it matters
Because topical minoxidil relies on follicular SULT1A1 enzymes for bioactivation into its active sulfate form, pre-treating with an enzyme booster may increase clinical response rates in non-responders or slow responders.
Limits
The trial had a very small sample size (n = 24 total; 12 per group) and a short follow-up duration of only 60 days. The abstract does not report quantitative hair counts, hair diameter measurements, adverse events, or formulation specifics, and outcomes relied solely on global photography.
