What was done
Ambulatory patients with mild-to-moderate COVID-19 were treated with combined metabolic activators (CMAs) consisting of L-serine, N-acetyl-L-cysteine, nicotinamide riboside, and L-carnitine tartrate. The authors evaluated time to symptom-free recovery using a placebo-controlled, open-label Phase 2 study and a double-blind Phase 3 randomized trial. Plasma proteomic and metabolomic profiles were also analyzed.
What was found
Complete recovery time was significantly shorter in the CMA group than in the placebo group: - Phase 2: 6.6 days vs 9.3 days. - Phase 3: 5.7 days vs 9.2 days. Plasma analysis showed significant improvements in proteins and metabolites related to inflammation and antioxidant metabolism in the CMA group compared with placebo.
Why it matters
Supplementing with precursors for glutathione and NAD+ may accelerate clinical recovery in mild-to-moderate respiratory viral infections like COVID-19 by supporting host cellular metabolism.
