What was done
Researchers evaluated nocturnal penile tumescence (NPT) and verified the degree of sleep erections by direct observation across three nights in 40 healthy, sexually nondysfunctional men aged 23 to 73 years. On the third night, participants were systematically awakened during tumescent episodes to evaluate erectile quality alongside sleep architecture parameters.
What was found
The abstract reports directional findings without numerical values, effect sizes, or p-values. Total sleep time and sleep efficiency decreased significantly with advancing age, whereas adjusted REM sleep duration did not vary significantly after age 30. NPT frequency and duration decreased progressively with age independent of variations in sleep, while circumferential increase during episodes did not decrease. Most men over age 60 did not achieve full sleep erections despite self-reporting regular intercourse.
Why it matters
The study shows that age-related decline in nocturnal erections occurs naturally in sexually active, healthy men. This suggests that diminished NPT alone should not be interpreted as pathological impotence in older demographics.
Limits
