Using activity-dependent cell labeling (FosTRAP) in mice, researchers labeled neuronal ensembles in the insular cortex activated during dextran sulfate sodium-induced colitis and zymosan-induced peritonitis. They subsequently tested whether chemogenetic reactivation of these captured ensembles could retrieve the peripheral inflammatory states.
