What was done
Researchers tested selective and guided cell repopulation on denuded root surfaces using a fenestration model in squirrel monkeys. The model excluded gingival epithelium and connective tissue to favor cell repopulation from the periodontal ligament and alveolar bone. Experimental sites were compared histometrically to sham-operated control sites at 3, 7, 14, and 35 days of healing.
What was found
New cementum, bone, and periodontal ligament formation appeared by day 14, and healing was nearly complete by day 35. Both experimental and sham-operated sites showed root resorption and ankylosis, but experimental sites demonstrated significantly more periodontal regeneration compared to controls. The abstract reports no numerical measurements or exact p-values.
Why it matters
This study provides histological proof-of-principle that excluding soft-tissue cells in favor of periodontal ligament and alveolar bone cells facilitates comprehensive periodontal tissue regeneration.
Limits
The study was conducted in a non-human primate model (squirrel monkeys) with surgically created acute fenestration defects, which do not fully replicate chronic human periodontal disease. The abstract does not state the total number of animals or defect sites examined, nor does it provide quantitative histometric data or confidence intervals.
