What was done
Participants (N = 103) were presented with mathematical problems containing a hidden rule that allowed instant solutions. During a subsequent resting period, researchers monitored brain activity across the sleep-onset transition (N1 sleep versus wakefulness and deeper sleep) to measure its effect on discovering the hidden rule.
What was found
Spending at least 15 s in N1 sleep during rest tripled the likelihood of discovering the hidden rule (83% vs. 30% when remaining awake). This creative enhancement vanished if participants progressed to deeper sleep.
Why it matters
This study provides empirical evidence for a transient creative sweet spot during the sleep-onset twilight zone (N1 sleep), highlighting the delicate balance required between falling asleep lightly and sleeping too deeply to spark insight.
Limits
