Researchers tested the virucidal activity of rosin soap (derived from coniferous tall oil) in vitro against enveloped viruses (influenza A virus [IAV], respiratory syncytial virus [RSV], and SARS-CoV-2) and a nonenveloped virus (encephalomyocarditis virus [EMCV]), examining the effects of soap concentration, incubation time, and temperature on viral infectivity.
What was found
Rosin soap inactivated human enveloped viruses (IAV, RSV, and SARS-CoV-2) but failed to affect the nonenveloped virus EMCV. Against IAV, treatment resulted in a 100,000-fold reduction in infectivity in a concentration-dependent manner, independent of incubation time or temperature. Quantitative reduction numbers for RSV and SARS-CoV-2 were not reported in the abstract.
Why it matters
These findings identify tall oil-derived rosin soap as a potential active ingredient for disinfectants targeting enveloped respiratory viruses such as influenza and coronaviruses.
Limits
This was entirely an in vitro bench study without assessment in clinical, hygiene, or real-world surface contexts. Numerical reduction data for RSV and SARS-CoV-2, exact concentrations tested, cytotoxicity, and safety profiles were not reported in the abstract, and the compound lacked activity against nonenveloped viruses.
