What was done
In Experiment 1, researchers recorded functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) in human participants performing tasks designed to simulate mind-wandering: reading expository texts while ignoring personally relevant autobiographical memory cues, or retrieving memories while ignoring text. In Experiment 2, functional connectivity was assessed both at rest and during task states to examine the coupling between default mode network (DMN) subregions, primary visual cortex, and ventral visual areas in relation to reading comprehension and self-generated internal thought.
What was found

Qualitatively, medial DMN regions were recruited during autobiographical memory retrieval, whereas left temporal and lateral prefrontal DMN regions alongside ventral visual cortex were recruited during reading. Functional connectivity analyses showed that memory-linked DMN regions were decoupled from ventral visual cortex relative to reading-linked DMN areas. Furthermore, greater decoupling between reading-linked DMN sites and primary visual cortex was observed in participants with more self-generated thoughts and poorer reading comprehension, as well as during the active retrieval of autobiographical memories.
