How Well Do Product Labels Indicate the Presence of PFAS in Consumer Items Used by Children and Adolescents?

What was done

Researchers evaluated 93 consumer items marketed to or used by children and adolescents across three categories (furnishings, apparel, and bedding) and five labeling groups combining water/stain resistance and 'green' (including 'nontoxic') claims. All 93 items were screened for total fluorine. Solvent extracts from a subset of 61 items were analyzed for 36 targeted PFAS, and a smaller subset of 30 items was tested for perfluoroalkyl acids (PFAAs) generated via precursor oxidation using the total oxidizable precursor (TOP) assay.

What was found

Items marketed as water- or stain-resistant showed more frequent detections and higher concentrations of total fluorine than those without such claims. Targeted PFAS were detected only in products labeled as water- and/or stain-resistant. In the TOP assay subset, post-oxidation PFAA concentrations often exceeded pre-oxidation levels, pointing to the presence of PFAA precursors. Among products advertised as water- and/or stain-resistant, detection frequencies and concentrations of targeted PFAS were similar regardless of whether the product carried 'green' assurances. The abstract reported no specific numerical concentrations or exact percentages.

Why it matters

This study shows that 'green' or 'nontoxic' marketing claims do not protect consumers from PFAS in children's products. Consumers seeking to minimize PFAS exposure must instead look for the presence or absence of water- and stain-resistant labeling.
