Mild weight loss occurred in all studies, occasionally necessitating nutritional intervention between chemotherapy cycles. One randomized controlled trial observed improved radiological response to neoadjuvant chemotherapy in breast cancer. Specific numerical data and effect estimates were not reported in the abstract.
Why it matters
This review tempers popular claims regarding fasting during cancer treatment, indicating that while short fasting periods appear safe for selected well-nourished patients, clinical proof of improved oncologic efficacy remains insufficient.
Limits
The clinical evidence base is very small (seven studies total, with only one RCT). Findings apply primarily to well-nourished individuals with gynecologic or breast cancers and cannot be generalized to malnourished patients or other tumor types.
