Audiogram of Chinese Phonemes: Construction and Evaluation.

What was done
Researchers constructed a Chinese-based speech banana (CSB) by mapping Chinese phonemes by frequency and intensity onto an audiogram. To evaluate its clinical validity, 15 Chinese-speaking hearing aid users were tested, comparing the CSB's predictive accuracy against aided sound-field narrow-band noise thresholds and speech recognition thresholds.
What was found
The CSB showed a specificity of 94.2% below 8,000 Hz (percentage of perceptible sounds correctly identified) and a sensitivity of 96.8% above 8,000 Hz (percentage of imperceptible sounds correctly identified). Specificity above 8,000 Hz and sensitivity below 8,000 Hz were not reported in the abstract.
Why it matters
This tool provides an acoustic mapping tailored specifically to Chinese phonemes, giving clinicians an evidence-based visual counseling tool to assess speech sound audibility in Chinese-speaking hearing aid users.
Limits
The clinical evaluation sample was very small (n = 15 hearing aid users), limiting statistical power and generalizability. The abstract does not provide full diagnostic accuracy metrics across all frequency bands or detail participant characteristics.
