The authors searched Cochrane Library, PubMed, ISI, Scopus, Embase, and Pedro up to September 2021 for studies evaluating the effects of acute and chronic exercise modalities (aerobic, anaerobic, and resistance training) on circulating plasma or serum irisin levels in healthy participants. A random-effects network meta-analysis was performed using Hedge's g standardized mean difference (SMD) and P-score rankings.

What was found

Across 16 included studies (6 acute with 175 participants; 10 chronic with 433 participants), acute aerobic exercise (Hedge's g = 0.23; 95% CI: -0.58, 1.03) and acute anaerobic exercise (Hedge's g = 0.12; 95% CI: -0.45, 0.70) showed non-statistically significant increases relative to control. For chronic exercise, resistance training ranked superior to anaerobic and aerobic training (P score = 0.632). Comparing acute and chronic modalities, acute training ranked highest overall for improving irisin levels (P score = 0.721).
