What was done
Sexually experienced male rats underwent in vivo microdialysis to measure nucleus accumbens (NAcc) dopamine (DA) and metabolite levels during copulation to satiety, 24 hours later upon presentation of a new receptive female (behind a barrier and with direct access), and during pharmacological reversal of sexual inhibition with anandamide.
What was found
The abstract reports directional findings without numerical values or exact test statistics. NAcc DA remained elevated during copulation to satiety. Twenty-four hours later, basal DA levels were significantly reduced compared to initial baseline. Presenting a receptive female at 24 hours did not induce the normal NAcc DA increase, but instead produced a decrease that persisted upon direct access (during which rats did not copulate). Anandamide slightly increased NAcc DA levels coinciding with the reversal of sexual satiety.
Why it matters
These findings suggest that behavioral refractoriness following sexual satiety is mediated by suppressed basal and stimulus-evoked mesolimbic dopamine release, pointing to a potential neurochemical threshold needed for natural reward responsiveness.
Limits
