Literature from PubMed Central, Europe PMC, and Medline was reviewed to assess the metabolic importance of brown adipose tissue (BAT) in humans and evaluate its feasibility as an obesity target.
What was found
No numerical data or effect sizes are reported in the abstract. Active adult BAT is detectable by 18F-FDG PET-CT in supraclavicular, subclavian, and thoracic spine regions and is regulated by thyroid hormones, the sympathetic nervous system, and uncoupling protein 1 (UCP1). Cold exposure stimulates white adipose tissue browning but has practical implementation limits. Pharmacological activators such as mirabegron and obeticholic acid carry adverse effect concerns, whereas capsinoids are tolerable. Currently available BAT-activating monotherapies are reported as unlikely to achieve significant weight loss in humans.
