The abstract reports no numerical data. It describes that calcitriol induces rapid epithelial calcium influx and cellular uptake mediated by the membrane receptor protein disulfide-isomerase A3 (PDIA3). Vitamin D also stimulates second messengers modulating WNT, sonic hedgehog, STAT1-3, and NF-kappaB pathways, engages megalin-cubilin complexes, and regulates mitochondrial energy production, membrane potential, fusion-fission, ion channel activity, and apoptosis.
Why it matters
Nongenomic mechanisms help explain rapid cellular and cytoprotective effects of vitamin D that occur too quickly to be driven by classic nuclear receptor gene transcription alone.
Limits
This is a narrative review without systematic search methodology, meta-analytic data, or original human clinical trials. Clinical relevance remains theoretical and derived primarily from mechanistic or preclinical models.
