Clinical and histological evaluation of microneedle fractional radiofrequency treatment on facial fine lines and skin laxity in Koreans.

What was done
Retrospective chart and histology review of 15 Korean patients (median age 46 years) who received a single session of temperature-controlled bipolar microneedle fractional radiofrequency for facial rejuvenation. Outcomes were evaluated via serial photography assessed by two independent dermatologists, participant satisfaction scores, histological changes (baseline, immediately post-treatment, and at 4-month follow-up), and recorded complications.
What was found
Histology showed partially denatured collagen fibers and dermal shrinkage immediately post-treatment, with an increase in elastin and collagen at 4 months. Overall, 86.7% of participants rated the results as satisfactory. Dermatologist consensus ratings at 4 months classified participants as very much improved (53.3%), much improved (26.7%), and improved (20%). The treatment was well tolerated without significant long-lasting discomfort.
Why it matters
Provides preliminary paired clinical and histological evidence in an East Asian cohort that temperature-controlled microneedle fractional radiofrequency induces neocollagenesis and neoelastogenesis to improve facial fine lines and skin laxity.
Limits
Small sample size (n=15), retrospective uncontrolled design with no comparator or sham group, short follow-up period limited to 4 months, and reliance on subjective and semi-quantitative ratings rather than quantitative biophysical skin measurements.
