What was done
The authors designed a sound-pressure level (SPL) calculation method and listening system based on the WHO-ITU (ITU-T H.870) safe listening standards. The system consists of a modified Personal Listening Device (SL-PLD) to track listening dose and regulate volume output, alongside a companion application (SL-APP) that monitors exposure and generates warnings. The calculation accuracy was validated against measurements from a reference SoundCheck tool.
What was found
The proposed calculation method achieved an accuracy of 98.8% with a deviation of 0.88 dB relative to the SoundCheck measurement at a 76 dB reference SPL. The SL-PLD controlled output SPL as sound dose accumulated, and the SL-APP delivered warnings when the listening dose exceeded preset safety thresholds.
Why it matters
Standardizing precise sound-dosage tracking and automated volume-limiting directly within personal listening hardware and software can help prevent recreational noise-induced hearing loss.
Limits
The abstract describes only benchtop calibration and validation against a reference tool, with no human participants tested. Real-world efficacy, acoustic variations across different headphone models, ambient noise impact, and long-term user compliance were not evaluated.
