The abstract reports no numerical data. Qualitatively, carbohydrate intake upregulates hepatic DNL, with fructose reported as more lipogenic than glucose. Increased n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid intake appears to downregulate DNL, whereas increased protein intake may upregulate it. The independent roles of fat and protein, as well as the impact of host phenotypes (such as sex, age, ethnicity, and menopause status), remain unclear.
Why it matters
Clarifying how specific macronutrients drive hepatic fat synthesis helps evaluate dietary contributors to hepatic steatosis and informs nutritional guidelines for metabolic liver disease.
Limits
As a narrative review, it presents no quantitative effect sizes, search methodology, or study counts. Data regarding the distinct effects of dietary fats, proteins, and host phenotypic factors on hepatic DNL remain scarce.
