Male rats were trained to perform instrumental operant responses under a second-order schedule of reinforcement to gain access to an estrous female. Investigators tested the effects of medial preoptic area (POA) lesions, surgical castration, and testosterone replacement on instrumental measures of sexual motivation and unconditioned copulatory behavior.

What was found

The abstract reports no numerical values or statistical metrics. POA lesions abolished mounts, intromissions, and ejaculation without disrupting instrumental responses, female investigation, or abortive mounting attempts. Castration abolished copulatory attempts and caused a marked decrease in instrumental responding. Testosterone replacement resulted in prompt reinstatement of instrumental responses and a more gradual recovery of unconditioned sexual behavior.

Why it matters

This study demonstrates a neuroendocrine dissociation between appetitive sexual motivation (seeking) and consummatory execution (copulation), showing that the medial preoptic area is required for copulatory performance but not for motivational operant responding.
