Detection of Lymphatic Vessels in the Superficial Fascia of the Abdomen.

What was done
Tissue specimens were harvested from three adult volunteer patients during abdominoplasty. Researchers stained the specimens using D2-40 antibodies for lymphatic endothelium to evaluate the presence, structure, and distribution of lymphatic vessels across the papillary dermis, superficial adipose tissue (SAT), deep adipose tissue (DAT), and superficial fascia.
What was found
Lymphatic vessels were heavily present in the papillary dermis parallel to the skin surface. The SAT contained thin lymphatic vessels with a mean diameter of 11.6 ± 7.71 µm located close to fibrous septa. The DAT contained an overall comparable content of lymphatic vessels to the SAT, which followed blood vessels and had larger diameters (exact values not reported). The superficial fascia showed a higher density and larger diameter of lymphatic vessels running longitudinally and transversely along fibers, forming an intertwined network.
Why it matters
This study provides histological evidence of a dedicated lymphatic network within the abdominal superficial fascia, which may help guide surgical techniques and postoperative rehabilitation strategies involving subcutaneous tissue.
Limits
The sample size is very small (n = 3) and restricted to patients undergoing abdominoplasty, limiting generalizability to other body regions or patient populations. The abstract does not provide numerical values for lymphatic vessel density or for vessel diameters in the DAT, dermis, or superficial fascia, and no functional in vivo flow was assessed.
