What was done

Authors conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials from PubMed, Web of Science, and SportDiscus evaluating physical recovery techniques after exercise-induced fatigue. The primary outcome was vagally-mediated heart rate variability, specifically the root mean square of successive differences (RMSSD). Twenty-four studies were identified, and 17 were quantitatively synthesized across subgroup analyses for recovery modality, exercise type, exercise intensity, and participant training status.

What was found

Physical recovery techniques produced a small-to-moderate increase in RMSSD overall (k = 22 effect sizes, Hedges' g = 0.40, 95% CI: 0.20–0.61, p = 0.04) with moderate heterogeneity. In subgroup analysis by recovery method, cold water immersion showed a moderate-to-large effect (g = 0.75, 95% CI: 0.42–1.07), whereas other techniques showed no significant effect. Recovery techniques applied after resistance exercise (g = 0.69, 95% CI: 0.48–0.89) and cardiovascular intermittent exercise (g = 0.52, 95% CI: 0.06–0.97) showed benefits, while no effect was observed after continuous cardiovascular exercise. Training status and exercise intensity did not show significant subgroup differences.

Why it matters

This review clarifies that passive or active physical recovery strategies do not uniformly restore autonomic balance after exercise; cold water immersion appears to be the primary driver of accelerated parasympathetic reactivation, particularly following resistance training.

Limits

The abstract does not report participant sample sizes, specific non-cold recovery modalities tested, or long-term performance outcomes. Moderate statistical heterogeneity was present, and 7 of the 24 identified studies could not be pooled in the meta-analysis.
