What was done

Researchers investigated the migration of total phthalate acid esters (PAEs) from repurposed non-food plastic paint buckets into pap (a liquid food). They screened seven factors using a Plackett-Burman design, tested factor interactions via a full factorial design, established migration conditions with a face-centered composite design, and modeled migration kinetics using pseudo-first order, pseudo-second order, and intra-particle diffusion equations.

What was found

Temperature, pH, and contact time were identified as the most influential factors, exhibiting non-linear effects and interactions. Under simulated local use conditions (pap temperature > 70 °C, pH ≤ 4 or ≥ 10, and contact time > 2 h), total PAE release exceeded 50 µg/L. The migration kinetics followed a pseudo-second order model.

Why it matters

Repurposing non-food plastic containers such as paint buckets for hot and acidic liquid foods can lead to substantial migration of endocrine-disrupting phthalates into consumed food.
