The authors reviewed the British National Formulary (BNF), local hospital pharmacy guidelines, and online Summaries of Product Characteristics (SPCs) to identify content of animal origin (CAO) in medications commonly used in trauma and orthopaedics, assessed UK COVID-19 vaccines for CAO, and identified potential non-animal alternatives.

What was found

The abstract reports qualitative formulary findings without numerical trial data: standard unfractionated heparin is porcine-derived (fondaparinux is an alternative); cholecalciferol (vitamin D3) is manufactured using lanolin from sheep's wool (ergocalciferol/vitamin D2 is a non-animal alternative); propofol contains egg proteins; and widely available UK COVID-19 vaccines are free of animal products.

Why it matters

Clinicians infrequently consider animal-derived excipients or active ingredients, but understanding which medications contain animal products allows providers to offer alternatives that respect patient dietary, ethical, or religious preferences.

Limits

This is a narrative review with no primary patient data, quantitative outcomes, or systematic literature search methodology. Findings are specific to UK pharmaceutical formulations and SPCs, which may not generalize to other countries where drug manufacturing sources differ.
