Overweight middle-aged men and women with insulin resistance and subjective cognitive decline participated in a 12-week controlled trial evaluating daily administration of whole-fruit strawberry powder. Diet records confirmed adherence to abstinence from outside berry products.
What was found
Strawberry-treated participants showed diminished memory interference (p = 0.02; Cohen's f = 0.45) and reduced depressive symptoms (p = 0.04; Cohen's f = 0.39). No effect was observed on metabolic measures.
Why it matters
This study provides preliminary evidence that introducing strawberry supplementation in midlife may support cognitive function and mood in adults at risk for late-life dementia.
Limits
The sample size is not reported in the abstract. The 12-week duration is short, the dose of anthocyanins was noted as comparatively low, and the intervention produced no measurable effect on metabolic parameters.
