From 3,027 screened records, 14 studies met inclusion criteria.

What was found

The abstract reports no numerical values, pooled estimates, or effect sizes. Most included studies identified a clear association between advanced donor age and reduced MSC clonogenic and proliferative potential. In contrast, findings regarding the impact of age on chondrogenic, osteogenic, and adipogenic differentiation potential were conflicting and heterogeneous.

Why it matters

Understanding whether donor age impairs MSC chondrogenesis is critical for determining the viability of autologous cell therapies in older patients with degenerative joint disease. This review highlights that while cell expansion capacity declines with age, evidence for impaired chondrogenesis per se remains inconsistent.

Limits
