What was done
In a replication of the "Lost in the Mall" false memory implantation paradigm, 123 participants were exposed to a fabricated event supported by familial informants. Researchers evaluated participants' memory and belief for the false event before and after a full debriefing protocol, with a follow-up assessment conducted 3 days post-debriefing to measure the retraction of false memories and beliefs.
What was found
By the end of the implantation protocol, 14% of participants reported a false memory and 52% held a false belief that the fabricated event occurred. Three days post-debriefing, the false memory rate fell to 6% and false belief fell to 7%. Nearly all persistent false memories became nonbelieved memories (participants recalled details but acknowledged the event did not happen). Richer, more detailed memories were more resistant to correction but were still mostly retracted.
Why it matters
The findings demonstrate that debriefing can effectively reverse experimentally implanted false memories, mitigating major ethical concerns about lasting deception in memory research.
Limits
The study lacked a non-debriefed control group to distinguish debriefing effects from natural memory decay. The follow-up period was limited to 3 days, leaving long-term retention unmeasured, and only a single false-event paradigm was evaluated.
