Acute effects of the 4-4-8 breathing technique on arterial stiffness in healthy young men.

What was done
Fifteen healthy men (mean age 20 ± 0 years) participated in a two-condition crossover study comparing a slow-breathing intervention (12 breaths: 4 s inhalation, 4 s pause, 8 s exhalation) with a control condition. Researchers measured carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity (cfPWV), brachial-ankle PWV (baPWV), brachial blood pressure, and autonomic markers (high-frequency [HF] and low-frequency [LF] heart rate variability) at baseline, 30 minutes, 60 minutes, and 24 hours following the intervention.
What was found
The abstract reports statistical significance without raw numbers or effect sizes. At 30 minutes post-intervention, baPWV and brachial systolic blood pressure decreased significantly compared to baseline in the breathing condition (p < 0.05), while remaining unchanged in the control condition. Central arterial stiffness (cfPWV) did not change in either group. Autonomic markers showed a significant increase in HF (p < 0.05) and decrease in LF (p < 0.05) at 30 minutes in the breathing condition only. The abstract does not report specific values or outcomes for the 60-minute and 24-hour follow-ups.
Why it matters
This study provides acute physiological evidence that a brief session of paced slow breathing can temporarily alter autonomic balance and reduce peripheral vascular stiffness in healthy adults.
Limits
The sample size is very small (n = 15) and restricted strictly to 20-year-old healthy males, limiting generalizability to females, older demographics, or clinical populations with baseline cardiovascular disease. Central arterial stiffness (cfPWV) did not improve, and the abstract omits numerical values, effect sizes, and results for later timepoints (60 minutes and 24 hours).
