Bifidobacterium longum 1714 improves sleep quality and aspects of well-being in healthy adults: a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial.

What was done
Eighty-nine adults aged 18–45 with impaired baseline sleep (Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index [PSQI] global score ≥ 5) were enrolled in an 8-week randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial. Participants received daily Bifidobacterium longum 1714 or a placebo. The primary outcome was change in global PSQI score at 8 weeks. Secondary outcomes included subjective well-being and sleep subscales, as well as objective sleep parameters measured by actigraphy.
What was found
Global PSQI scores improved in both the probiotic and placebo groups, with no significant difference between groups at 8 weeks. Compared to placebo, B. longum 1714 produced significant improvements in the PSQI sleep quality component (p < 0.05) and daytime dysfunction (p < 0.05) at week 4, and social functioning (p < 0.05) and energy/vitality (p < 0.05) at week 8. No significant differences were detected between groups on objective actigraphy metrics. Exact numeric values and confidence intervals were not reported in the abstract.
Why it matters
This study indicates that B. longum 1714 may moderately accelerate subjective perceived sleep recovery and improve daytime vitality, though it does not measurably alter objective sleep architecture.
Limits
The primary trial endpoint (8-week global PSQI) was negative compared to placebo. Sample size was small (n = 89), findings were confined to subjective secondary endpoints, objective actigraphy showed no effect, and the abstract omits exact point estimates and variance.
