What was done
An umbrella meta-analysis searched Web of Science, PubMed, Scopus, and Google Scholar through March 2023 to assess resveratrol's effects on anthropometric indices and inflammatory markers. Data were pooled using a random-effects model, and evidence quality was evaluated using GRADE. The analysis synthesized 19 meta-analyses comprising 81 unique randomized controlled trials and 4,088 participants.
What was found
Resveratrol significantly reduced body mass index (ES = -0.119, 95% CI [-0.192, -0.047], p = 0.001), waist circumference (ES = -0.405, 95% CI [-0.664, -0.147], p = 0.002), C-reactive protein (ES = -0.390, 95% CI [-0.474, -0.306], p < 0.001), and TNF-α (ES = -0.455, 95% CI [-0.592, -0.318], p < 0.001) compared with control. Overall effects on body weight and Interleukin-6 were not significant. Subgroup analyses showed significant body weight reductions with intervention durations ≥12 weeks (ES = -0.160, 95% CI [-0.268, -0.052]) and dosages ≥500 mg/day (ES = -0.130, 95% CI [-0.238, -0.022]).
Why it matters
This umbrella review clarifies conflicting trial literature, demonstrating that resveratrol provides modest reductions in central adiposity and select inflammatory markers, particularly with higher doses and longer durations.
Limits
