What was done

A systematic review and meta-analysis compared the microbiological profiles of odontogenic maxillary sinusitis (OMS), chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS), and normal sinuses. PubMed and CNKI databases were searched from inception through July 2023. A random-effects model was used to calculate pooled prevalence estimates of identified bacterial species and genera.

What was found

Seventeen studies were included, providing 191 OMS samples from 6 studies, 610 CRS samples from 12 studies, and 92 normal sinus samples from 4 studies. Fusobacterium was the only genus with a statistically significantly higher prevalence in OMS compared to CRS, though exact numerical prevalence values, odds ratios, and p-values were not reported in the abstract. Staphylococcus aureus was more prevalent in CRS than in OMS. Prevalence of Peptostreptococcus and Prevotella was generally higher in OMS compared to CRS, but the differences did not reach statistical significance.
