What was done

Researchers analyzed dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) scans from participants aged 8 to 85 years across three major ethnic groups using National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) data from 1999 to 2018. The sample included 46,381 participants for lumbar spine BMD (LSBMD) and 20,944 participants for femoral neck BMD (FNBMD). Generalized additive models were applied to construct smoothed percentile curves to identify life-stage trends and the timing of peak BMD (PBMD).

What was found

Both sexes showed sharp pubertal increases in LSBMD, with females reaching PBMD earlier than males. Females maintained higher LSBMD than males before approximately age 50, except among Non-Hispanic Black participants. Male LSBMD plateaued around age 30 after peaking, whereas female fitted curves showed two peak points, with the second occurring at roughly 36–37 years. FNBMD peaked earlier than LSBMD, and males consistently had higher FNBMD than females. Non-Hispanic Black individuals had the highest BMD at all ages, while Non-Hispanic White and Mexican American participants had lower BMD, with Mexican Americans generally having the lowest.
