What was done
Researchers analyzed data from a preregistered study of 241 adolescents (ages 14–17, predominantly White) recruited between 2014 and 2016. Spontaneous emotion vocabulary (EV)—defined as the diversity of unique emotion words—was quantified via natural language processing applied to transcribed life stress interviews. Emotion differentiation (ED) was assessed through ecological momentary assessments, and depressive symptoms were evaluated through self-report measures. The authors evaluated two competing preregistered models: whether larger EV facilitates higher ED (lexical facilitation) or reflects less concise labeling associated with lower ED (emotional concision).
What was found
Negative emotion vocabulary and negative emotion differentiation showed an inverse relationship, supporting the emotional concision hypothesis rather than lexical facilitation. In addition, higher negative emotion vocabulary diversity and lower negative emotion differentiation were each independently associated with depression. The abstract reports directional associations but does not provide exact numerical effect sizes, test statistics, or confidence intervals.
Why it matters
These findings challenge the assumption that a broader spontaneous negative emotion vocabulary is uniformly adaptive, suggesting instead that extensive verbal elaboration of negative states may be linked to poorer emotion differentiation and elevated depressive symptoms in adolescence.
Limits
The study sample was predominantly White and limited to a single community cohort, restricting generalizability. The cross-sectional design cannot establish causal directionality between emotion vocabulary, differentiation, and depression. Specific statistical estimates and effect sizes are omitted from the abstract.
