What was done

Researchers evaluated red yeast rice (RYR) samples with varying monacolin K content against pure lovastatin (LOV). Phytochemical composition was analyzed using HPLC-DAD. HMG-CoA reductase inhibitory activity was measured via enzymatic assay. Pharmacokinetic behavior was modeled using in vitro simulated digestion and in silico approaches. Cytotoxicity was assessed across intestinal, hepatic, renal, and skeletal muscle cell lines, and expression of muscle damage-related genes was quantified in skeletal muscle cells using qRT-PCR.

RYR phytocomplexes demonstrated superior HMG-CoA reductase inhibition compared to isolated lovastatin.
