What was done
Researchers tracked 70 newlywed couples (128 individuals) over their first three years of marriage. Participants reported on relationship characteristics within three months of marriage and assessed marital satisfaction every four months for three years. Saliva samples were genotyped for the AVPR1A RS3 repeat-length polymorphism. The study tested whether carrying the 334 allele or having a higher number of short alleles was associated with worse relationship maintenance and pair-bonding difficulties.
What was found
The abstract provides no exact numerical values, effect sizes, or test statistics. Contrary to prior literature and the authors' hypotheses, carrying at least one 334 allele was associated with fewer self-reported marital problems and lower interest in romantic alternatives. Additionally, a greater number of short alleles was positively associated with relationship dedication and higher marital satisfaction at baseline.
