Effects of one-night partial sleep deprivation on perivascular space volume fraction: Findings from the Stockholm Sleepy Brain Study.

What was done
The authors analyzed publicly available data from the Stockholm Sleepy Brain Study to evaluate whether a late-night short-sleep experiment (partial sleep deprivation) and sleep stage architecture alter perivascular space (PVS) volume fraction. The sample included 60 participants divided into younger (20–30 years) and older (65–75 years) age groups. Models evaluated associations between sleep stages (N2 and N3 metrics) and PVS volume fractions in the centrum semiovale and basal ganglia.
What was found
The abstract provides no numerical data, effect sizes, or test statistics. Partial sleep deprivation was not significantly associated with major changes in PVS volume fraction. Although uncorrected interactions were observed between sleep deprivation status and N3 sleep percentage in the centrum semiovale, and between sleep deprivation status and N2 sleep (percentage and duration) in the basal ganglia, none of these findings remained statistically significant after multiple comparisons corrections.
Why it matters
These findings suggest that acute, single-night partial sleep restriction does not produce detectable macro-structural alterations in MRI-derived perivascular space volume fractions in healthy young or older adults.
Limits
The abstract reports no numerical values, confidence intervals, or p-values. The intervention evaluated only a single night of partial sleep loss rather than chronic sleep disturbance. Sample size was modest (n = 60) across two age strata, and all observed interaction effects failed to survive multiple testing corrections.
