What was done

A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial evaluated the vascular effects of oral taurine supplementation in 165 patients with type 2 diabetes. Participants were randomized to receive either taurine at 2.4 g/day (n = 82, mean age 60.0 ± 8.6 years) or placebo (n = 83, mean age 59.1 ± 10.4 years) for 12 weeks. Outcomes measured included systolic blood pressure, endothelium-dependent and endothelium-independent vasodilation, pulse wave velocity, and platelet calcium influx.

What was found

Compared to placebo, 12 weeks of taurine supplementation led to a statistically significant reduction in systolic blood pressure, improvement of both endothelium-dependent and endothelium-independent vasodilation, and improvement in pulse wave velocity. Taurine also significantly inhibited platelet calcium influx. The abstract reports qualitative statistical significance for these outcomes but provides no absolute numbers, effect sizes, or p-values.

Why it matters

Vascular dysfunction is a major driver of cardiovascular disease and peripheral arterial disease in type 2 diabetes. These findings suggest that oral taurine may serve as a potential adjunctive intervention to improve vascular function and arterial stiffness.
