What was done

Pelvic oscillations in sagittal, frontal, and transverse planes were measured using a wearable inertial measurement unit (IMU) system during assisted and unassisted walking. The study evaluated 49 elderly patients (age > 65) recovering from hip surgery, divided into Group A (n = 15, treated with osteosynthesis metallica) and Group B (n = 34, treated with hip arthroplasty).

What was found

In the frontal plane, pelvic metrics improved significantly from assisted to unassisted walking in both Group A (46.4% to 75.2%, p = 0.001) and Group B (52.6% to 72.2%, p = 0.001). In the transverse plane, Group A improved significantly from 47.7% to 80.2% (p = 0.001), whereas Group B showed a non-significant change from 73.0% to 80.5% (p = 0.068). Changes in the sagittal plane were not statistically significant for either Group A (68.8% to 71.1%, p = 0.313) or Group B (76.4% to 69.1%, p = 0.065).

Why it matters

The findings demonstrate that wearable IMU sensors can objectively capture multidirectional pelvic stability and symmetry differences during post-surgical walking rehabilitation in older adults.
