A systematic review searched PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science through February 2024 for clinical trials comparing *Mucuna pruriens* to standard levodopa in patients with Parkinson's disease. Study quality was assessed, and findings were synthesized narratively.
What was found
Five clinical trials with 108 total participants (mean age 60 years) met inclusion criteria. Methodological quality was rated as high in 1 trial, having some concerns in 1 trial, and low in 3 trials. The abstract reports no numerical effect sizes or confidence intervals, but notes that *M. pruriens* was associated with shorter time to reach the "on" disease stage, prolonged "on" duration, fewer adverse events, and no reports of dyskinesia.
Why it matters
*Mucuna pruriens* naturally contains 4% to 6% L-dopa alongside potential antioxidant and anti-inflammatory compounds, making it a potential alternative or adjunct to conventional levodopa therapy in Parkinson's disease.
Limits
The total evidence base is very small (108 participants across 5 trials), and 3 of the 5 included studies were judged to be of low quality. The interventions had substantial heterogeneity, and no quantitative meta-analysis or long-term safety data were reported in the abstract.
