What was done

A longitudinal ecological daily assessment study (the ALAMA study) evaluated whether a drop in mental well-being occurs in the three days following ecstasy/MDMA use. A total of 244 young adults (aged 18–34) who use ecstasy/MDMA from the United Kingdom (n = 120) and the Netherlands (n = 124) were recruited via the nightlife scene and social media. Participants completed daily 3-minute smartphone questionnaires for 35 days measuring substance use, psychological well-being and pathology (depression, anxiety), sleep quality, harm reduction behaviours, and socio-demographics.

What was found

Participants reported a statistically significant drop in mental well-being in the three days following ecstasy/MDMA use (B = -0.14, SE = 0.04, p < .001). This association remained significant after controlling for other substance use, socio-demographics, harm reduction strategies, sleep quality, and baseline depression and anxiety. For commonly used substances other than ecstasy/MDMA and cocaine, no significant associations with mental well-being in the three days following use were observed.

Why it matters

This study provides prospective naturalistic evidence that the post-acute drop in mood ("mid-week blues") following ecstasy use is associated with MDMA itself rather than solely being an artifact of sleep disruption, pre-existing psychopathology, or non-cocaine polydrug use.

Limits

Data relied entirely on self-reports collected via a smartphone app without biochemical verification of substance use, purity, or dosage. The sample was restricted to young adults in the UK and the Netherlands who frequent nightlife scenes, limiting generalizability to wider populations or clinical MDMA use.
