What was done
Researchers purchased 12 cannabis edible packages from local dispensaries and convenience stores in Jackson, Mississippi. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) was used to measure and compare actual concentrations of cannabidiol (CBD), Δ8-tetrahydrocannabinol (Δ8-THC), and Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol (Δ9-THC) against package label claims.
What was found
Measured Δ8-THC and Δ9-THC contents deviated substantially from package labels, ranging from 288 mg less to 5,491 mg more than advertised. No CBD was detected in any product. In three separate products from the same brand, measured Δ8-THC differed from labeled amounts by 1,542 mg, 719 mg, and 5,491 mg.
Why it matters
Severe discrepancies between labeled and actual THC content in over-the-counter edibles pose significant risks for unintended intoxication and acute toxicity, particularly in pediatric accidental ingestions.
Limits
The sample size was very small (n = 12 packages) and restricted to a single geographic area (Jackson, Mississippi), limiting generalizability across other regions or brands. Batch-to-batch variability across a broader inventory and packaging integrity factors were not evaluated.
