What was done

A retrospective review of prospectively collected registry data in 83 adult cochlear implant (CI) recipients (mean age 66.2 years, range 20–84). Patient-reported outcome measures were evaluated pre-CI, early post-CI (1 to 3 months), and long-term post-CI (6 to 12 months). Measured tools included the Tinnitus Handicap Inventory (THI); Speech, Spatial, and Qualities of Hearing Scale-12 (SSQ-12); and Cochlear Implant Quality of Life-10 (CIQOL-10).

What was found

THI scores significantly improved from baseline to early post-CI, with 77.2% of recipients reporting clinically significant improvement in tinnitus-induced distress, and no additional gains by long-term follow-up. Patients with early improvement had shorter deafness durations and greater CI device usage. Early post-CI THI scores correlated negatively with long-term overall SSQ-12 scores. Long-term post-CI THI scores also correlated negatively with long-term CIQOL-10 and SSQ-12 scores. Exact correlation coefficients, numerical score changes, and p-values were not reported in the abstract.

Why it matters

Early tinnitus relief after cochlear implantation occurs within the first few months and serves as an indicator of long-term hearing-related quality of life. This relationship can assist clinicians in counseling candidates regarding expected post-implantation outcomes and device wear time.

Limits
