What was done
A case report documenting an 11-year follow-up (2014–2025) of a 67-year-old woman with a large hepatic hemangioma who underwent surgical menopause in 2010 without hormone replacement therapy. Serial computed tomography (CT) and ultrasound (US) imaging were used to monitor lesion size and characteristics in the setting of early-stage (F0-F1) metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD).
What was found
Serial imaging showed gradual regression of the hepatic hemangioma at approximately 3 mm/year, decreasing from an initial size of 5.4 cm in 2014 to approximately 2 cm in 2025. CT follow-up demonstrated loss of previously seen enhancement regions, indicating sclerosing of the lesion.
Why it matters
This report provides longitudinal imaging documentation of spontaneous, gradual hepatic hemangioma regression and sclerosis over a decade, supporting conservative management for asymptomatic cases and a possible association with estrogen reduction.
Limits
As a single-patient case report (n = 1), findings cannot establish causality between surgical menopause and hemangioma regression, nor can they be generalized. Specific hormone levels were not reported in the abstract.
