What was done

Thirty-nine participants (21 males, mean age 32 ± 7 years; 18 females, mean age 28 ± 4 years) were tracked for three months using wearable activity trackers. The devices measured overnight resting heart rate variability, resting heart rate, sleep time, sleep efficiency, bed and wake times, and steps. Participants submitted daily self-reports of caffeine use, alcohol use, hydration, and feelings of stress, illness, motivation, energy, nervousness, emotional stability, and recovery to assess their association with heart rate variability.

What was found

Self-reported stress had no significant association with heart rate variability (Stressed HRV 63.5 ± 0.6 ms vs. Not Stressed HRV 63.1 ± 0.5 ms, p = 0.63). Self-reported nervousness also showed no significant association (Nervous HRV 62.9 ± 0.9 ms vs. Not Nervous HRV 63.7 ± 0.4 ms, p = 0.41). Daily feelings of being energized were negatively associated with heart rate variability (Energized HRV 64.1 ± 0.4 ms vs. Not Energized HRV 66.9 ± 0.8 ms, p < 0.01).

Why it matters

These findings suggest commercial wearable heart rate variability metrics do not reliably reflect subjective emotional states or perceived readiness. Consumer platforms should exercise caution when using heart rate variability alone to drive automated wellness advice.

Limits

The sample size was small (39 young adults). Subjective variables relied entirely on self-reports without standardized clinical instruments. The abstract does not specify the specific heart rate variability parameter used, wearable device make, or adjustments for reported caffeine and alcohol intake.
