Mass Media Narratives of Psychiatric Adverse Events Associated With Generative AI Chatbots: Rapid Scoping Review.

What was done
A rapid scoping review was conducted to systematically map mass media narratives of adverse psychiatric events temporally linked to generative AI chatbot interactions. Publicly accessible news articles published from November 2022 onward were identified primarily via Google News searches. Reviewers extracted data on demographics, platform features, interaction intensity, outcome type and severity, causal language, and types of supporting evidence, which were analyzed using descriptive statistics and cross-tabulations.
What was found
The search identified 71 news articles representing 36 unique cases. Suicide death was the most common reported outcome (35/61, 57.4% of cases with complete severity coding), followed by psychiatric hospitalization (12/61, 19.7%). Fatal outcomes were reported in 90.5% (19/21) of cases involving minors compared to 48.6% (17/35) in adults. ChatGPT was cited most frequently (51/71, 71.8%), followed by Character AI (10/71, 14.1%). Causal attribution referenced AI system behavior in 73.8% of cases (45/61), with 'alleged' being the predominant causal term (33/61, 54.1%). Evidence relied largely on chat logs or screenshots (34/61, 55.7%), while medical or police documentation was documented in only 1.6% (1/61). Regulatory calls appeared in 85% (51/60) of articles with available data.
Why it matters
Public awareness and governance debates around AI safety are heavily influenced by journalistic narratives focusing on severe outcomes such as youth suicide. Because these media accounts almost never incorporate objective clinical or forensic records, formal psychiatric surveillance and safety auditing are needed to separate verifiable clinical risks from media framing.
Limits
The findings reflect journalistic reporting patterns rather than verified epidemiological or clinical data. Causality cannot be inferred from media accounts. Verifiable medical or police records were nearly absent (1.6%), and searching was restricted primarily to Google News without systematic clinical database coverage.
