A cross-sectional study evaluated 401 adult video gamers (mean age 28.32, SD 6.14; 230 men), including 174 with a formal ADHD diagnosis. The authors assessed associations between hyperfocus, gaming motivation, flow, escapism, and ADHD symptoms using Spearman rank correlations, quantile regression modeling, and Mann-Whitney U tests.

Hyperfocus correlated positively with ADHD symptoms (rho = .386, p < .01), flow (rho = .292, p < .001), and external regulation of gaming motivation (rho = .283, p < .001). Quantile regression showed hyperfocus and flow had distinct patterns of association with escapism types and attention symptoms. Gamers with ADHD scored significantly higher than comparison gamers in both hyperfocus (U = 31794.000, p < .001) and flow (U = 22825.000, p < .01).
